Experienced & Trusted.
Creating a personalized estate plan can be one of the more important things you will do in your life. Your estate plan will help ensure your loved ones and the organizations you care about benefit from your generosity.
But what should you look for in an estate planning attorney? Ideally, you will want to work with someone who can guide through a process of identifying your unique values and objectives, and help you translate your desires into a sound, actionable plan. In other words, an effective estate planning attorney should offer you an effective planning process and demonstrate strong listening skills.
Areas of Practice.
But your attorney should give you more. Your counselor should also have the education and experience to help you navigate the technical aspects of estate planning. This includes at least six subject areas, listed below. These are topics your attorney should be prepared to discuss with you in plain English so that you can avoid common mistakes and make the best decisions for you.
Comprehensive Estate Planning
Estate planning is designed to protect ourselves during our lifetime as well as our loved ones after we are gone. A comprehensive plan consists of the transfer of our values, valuables, and plans for an efficient administration.
Prudent planning can help protect yourself, your business and your family in the event of divorce, bankruptcy, litigation, and other financial hardships.
The way you structure your charitable giving, not only during life, but also as a part of an estate plan, can really make a significant difference on you, your family, and the charities you are looking to support. Through careful planning, I can assist in the implementation of tax-advantaged strategies that can help maximize your charitable gift!
Special Needs Planning
It is often very scary to think about what will happen to a special-needs loved one after we are gone. However, with proper planning today, your loved one can be well taken care of!
Income Tax Planning
While many individuals do not have an estate tax issue, most do have some assets that carry with them an income tax issue. There are various strategies that can be implemented to ensure these assets are managed efficiently.
Estate and Gift Tax Planning
Special care should be taken for those whose assets exceed the current estate and gift tax exemption limits. Careful planning can make a significant difference in the amount of estate, gift or generation skipping transfer taxes owed.

Attorney at Law
I was fortunate to grow up in a home that had a heart for nonprofits and their missions. I witnessed and participated in a myriad of supportive roles with my family that benefitted individuals through both local and global nonprofit organizations.
While in middle school, my family decided to leave the corporate world to pursue the calling of full-time mission work. Through this experience, I observed firsthand the merit of aligning values with actions. By the time I began my college education, I participated in short-term projects in Mexico, Romania, Ukraine and Moldova.
My desire to help people led me to pursue an advanced legal degree in estate planning. This formed a natural progression from what I learned earlier, as it was a gateway into helping individuals from all walks of life to align their values with valuables.
Today, there are two ways I practice estate planning. First, I have served with Thompson & Associates since 2014 where I am a Senior Vice President providing quality estate planning recommendations to the friends and supporters of charitable organizations located across the country. And, second, I work with individual clients to help them express their personal values and priorities in their estate planning documents. It is tremendously rewarding work.
I have been married to my high school sweetheart, Katie, since 2008. We currently live in Brentwood, Tennessee with our diva kitty cat and energetic Dalmatian. In my free time, I enjoy hiking, top-roping at the local indoor climbing gym, and lead-climbing outdoors. These passions have taken us to some of the most beautiful parts of Tennessee.
Paul helped me create an estate plan that considered more than just the financial aspects. He helped me think about the emotional and administrative elements that those I leave behind will have to face. I really appreciated his complete, yet not overwhelming, approach to complicated subjects.
Mr. Grassmann handled our probate for a relative with ease as it moved through the court system. He then completed our family wills. I would highly endorse him for any legal work you would need. He is a friendly and respected lawyer.
We had the great opportunity to work with Paul to help us with our wills. Paul walked us through the process, gave us options to consider and always gave us scenarios which we didn’t think of as we were preparing our wills and Power of Attorney documents. I was very impressed with his thoroughness, follow-up and then the execution of our documents.
